New Rate & Terms

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year that I’ve been running my business full-time! It’s still exciting, crazy, and lots of hard work (and scary sometimes!) but I wouldn’t trade it. I bet you feel the same if you have your own small business.

After lots of review, reflection, and lessons learned over the year, I’m changing things up a bit. But, don’t worry, it’s nothing drastic!

New Rate

As of November 1, 2011, I have increased my rate for new clients.

Clients active prior to November 1 can still take advantage of my previous rate through the end of the year. Now’s the time to start a project before your rate goes up in the new year! (Need some ecommerce? Maybe a new site in a hurry? How about a maintenance plan?)

New rate: $60/hour

Of course, this rate only applies to hourly things. Projects and packages are still flat rate based on the project details. I’ve updated my Website Packages to reflect new package rates (they didn’t all go up!).

All projects & work will have a contract and project plan or work order detailing the work to be done, even if it’s maintenance. Just so there are no surprises when we take care of a little paperwork before we start on your next project. I’ve got it all streamlined so it’s painless. :)

New Terms

I’ve had really amazing feedback on my payment options. As a result, I’ve changed my terms to use them all the time. I will no longer have a net 21 day term and this is effective immediately.

If you’re not familiar with them, here is how the payments work.

Projects $500 – 999: 1 payment with a 7% discount or 2 equal payments. For example:

Your project is $750. You can make:
1 payment of $697.50 (due at project start)
2 payments of $375 (due at project start and finish)

Projects over $1000: 1 payment with a 7% discount, 2 equal payments, or 3 equal payments. For example:

Your project is $1500. You can make:
1 payment of $1395 (due at project start)
2 payments of $750 (due at project start and finish)
3 payments of $500 (due at project start, middle, and finish)

All payments are due upon invoice receipt.

Other Details

(These haven’t changed.)

  • Payments 30 days late will incur a late fee of 1.5%, compounded monthly.
  • The $25 returned check fee remains the same.

Please let me know if you have any questions and I’d love to hear your feedback!

Weekly Tech Roundup

This week’s Tech Roundup includes Samuel L. Ipsum, WordPress updates, browser trends, and portfolio redesign tips.

Samuel L. Ipsum – A Lorem Ipsum generator of Samuel L. Jackson movie quotes. Really not for the non-fan and probably not something you want to use on a client’s website, but awesome nonetheless.

Browser Trends October 2011: Has Chrome Plateaued? – Not much change in the browser wars in September but it looks like Firefox users are upgrading out of version 3.6. I’m guilty of running it on one of my machines – I like to keep a good variety of browsers around for live testing. And, of course, it’s great to see IE6 usage still dropping.

WordPress 3.2 crosses the 9 million download mark – I think these numbers are amazing. Can you imagine anything that has 97,800 downloads each day? But if you consider that almost a quarter of the internet runs WordPress, that’s not too surprising is it? Makes you wonder about all the sites that haven’t upgraded!

3.3 Pre-Beta User Feedback (aka Testing Results) – Speaking of WordPress upgrades: very interesting feedback here on WordPress 3.3 features. It’s pretty long but if you’re a WordPress nerd like me, you’ll want to take a look.

How to Plug In a USB Cable Correctly Every Time – There is an illustration at the top of this article that is perfect and priceless. How many times have you tried to plug in a USB cable, had it not work and flipped it, only to have it not work that way either. You flip it again and it works just fine. I’m so glad I’m not the only one! Really, you’d think it was simple. ;)

Redesign your portfolio site in 10 easy steps – It’s so hard to work on your own stuff. Use these 10 steps when you’re ready to take on your own redesign.

Weekly Small Business Roundup for October 7, 2011

Weekly Small Business Roundup

This week’s Small Business Roundup includes 2012 budgeting tips, productivity ideas, and getting your business ready for the holidays.

The One Marketing Thing That Has Made the Most Difference For Your Business – 31 marketing tips that have worked for real businesses. A lot of them you’ve probably heard before but as I’ve said previously it’s good to see a real-life example with the idea. I’m not so sure how broadly “Create Your Own Reality Show,” really works but it will for someone!

Is Your Budget Ready for Worst Case Scenario? – It’s getting to be that time of year again: budget time. Get ahead and work on your 2012 budget now. There are some really excellent suggestions in this article for your budget, including creating least likely, likely, and most likely scenarios. As a small business owner, if you only read one of these articles this week, read this one.

Two productivity articles with great tips for getting more done:
Microproductivity: Get More Done and Lower Your Work Stress Without a Second Wasted – This article has six 30-second suggestions. I don’t know about you, but I can’t sort my email in 30 seconds. Maybe that means I need a better system? One thing I’d like to add is that, sometimes, you just need to take that 30 seconds to stop and breathe. Enjoy your surroundings. Look at something beautiful. Taste your food or drink. Yes, it’s wonderful to be productive but you need a little “me” time, too.

Freelance Productivity: What’s Your Secret? – I’ve considered having “meeting” days and “office” days before but for some reason I just couldn’t justify it to myself. This article makes it sound so obvious! I love the idea of identifying what your prime work days are – we all have days where we are particularly productive and there is usually a pattern to them – and which days are less so and really working with that to get the most out of your time.

Black Friday Is Almost Here. If Your Web Site Is Not Ready, It’s Your Fault – The title of this article really says it all, but you should go read it to find out why. Making sure your website is ready for holiday shopping should be your number one priority right now. I know, you’re probably thinking it’s too early for holiday shopping. It may be too early for shopping but your website won’t magically be ready for shoppers on November 25 if you do nothing. You need to plan it out and get working on it now. And <teaser> keep an eye out for my upcoming special launching Monday, October 17. It’s just what you’ll need!

MOO Holiday Card Sale – I love MOO. They make amazing greeting cards, postcards, business cards, stickers, etc. They are currently having a sale on their holiday cards: 15% off if you use the code CARDSYAY at checkout. Now is a great time to stock up on holiday cards for your clients, family, & friends. Deal ends October 20.
