Weekly Small Business Roundup

This week’s Small Business Roundup includes Google+ integration in Google Search, Gmail phishing message, and un-resolutions for 2012.

Google Merges Search and Google+ Into Social Media Juggernaut – Google really wants you to use Google+. I suppose that’s one way to guarantee your social media venture is a hit – integrate it with the world’s most popular search engine and no one has a choice. Many differing opinions on this. There are so many more articles out there, but this is another one I particularly liked: Google Search Plus Is Shaking Things Up a Bit

Stop Looking Like a Phisher in Gmail – There are a lot of us using Gmail and you’ve probably seen this error message before: “This message may not have been sent by [email address]. Learn more Report phishing.” If you use Gmail and people see this when you send email to them, read this article to figure out how to fix it.

Freelancing Un-resolutions to Make 2012 Your Best Freelancing Year Yet – There are 10 really great suggestions here. There are a few of them that I could definitely put into practice.

How to Compute Your Business Income – This is a good article if you need a refresher or if you are just getting started and want to know how to figure out these numbers. I highly recommend working with a financial professional but you really should know what these numbers mean and how to calculate them yourself, too.

I Am Not a Web Designer – I thought this article was fascinating. And, it’s very true! As small business owners or freelancers, we do a lot more than our job title indicates. I primarily identify myself as a web developer because that’s mostly what I do. I mean, it’s what pays the bills, right? But I’m also business consultant, customer service, billing/accounting, blogger, project manager, adviser, brainstorm-er, troubleshooter, and – maybe most of all – fixer. That’s something to really think about the next time someone asks you what you do. Maybe I should drop the “web developer” and just go with the “Internet Business Consultant” title. Except that always confuses the heck out of everyone, so maybe not. ;)

Weekly Small Business Roundup

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! Hope you all had a great day with friends & family yesterday. This week’s Small Business Roundup includes social media calendars, collections tips, the new Gmail, and some Black Friday sales.

5 rules of small business advertising success – Some great, simple tips to use on your next marketing effort.

How to Create a Social Media Marketing Schedule – The social media schedule detailed here is kind of intense but it gives you some really good ideas for setting up your own schedule that meets your needs.

10 tips for making collection calls – The calls we never want to make. It’s never fun to have to track down money. If this is hard for you, keep in mind how you feel about paying your bills (on time and at all) when it’s time to send the late notices and make the past due phone calls. This is money you are owed for products and services you performed. It’s your customer’s responsibility to pay you for that and to do it on time. The “Be Proactive” tip is probably the best one in this article. It’s a nice gesture and it ensures your client received the invoice and allows you to answer any questions up front.

Master the New Gmail with These Tips, Shortcuts, and Add-Ons – If you use Gmail, check out these tips for making the most of the new version. There are a lot of goodies here!

Weekly Tech Roundup

This week’s Tech Roundup includes TimThumb vulnerability, a 4-lesson tutorial on building your own PC, and future CSS3 layouts.

Nosh’s 404 page – One of the more interesting 404 pages I’ve seen in a long time.

New in Labs: Preview Pane – Gmail’s added a preview pane. Just follow the instructions in this article to turn it on.

Ever wanted to build your own PC? Lifehacker put together a great series this week that helps you do just that:

The future of CSS layouts – This article takes a look at how CSS3 can and may, in the future, be used to create website layouts. These are really slick and I’m super excited for them. These new elements cut down on code and, if all browsers support them the same, headaches (although they’ll cut down on those anyway). I think even with the browser-specific CSS, these solutions are still less code than current methods. But, even with browser-specific code, you’ll still run into older browsers that don’t support an element at all so make sure you know your users before implementing. If you’re interested in this topic, check out the author’s (Peter Gasston) book, The Book of CSS3.

Zero Day Vulnerability in many WordPress Themes (timthumb.php) – If you use image thumbnails in your WordPress website, check to see if you’re using TimThumb. “The utility only does a partial match on hostnames allowing hackers to upload and execute arbitrary PHP code in your timthumb cache directory.” That doesn’t sound like anything you want to have happen to your website. If you’re using TimThumb, or aren’t sure if you are, and need to update to the latest version, please contact me. Here are the technical details: Technical details and scripts of the WordPress Timthumb.php hack. And for the fix: WordThumb is now TimThumb 2.0.

If you enjoy these Roundups please share with your friends!

Have a great weekend!
