Weekly Tech Roundup

This week’s Tech Roundup includes WordPress security update, W3 Total Cache write-up, free fonts, and Send to Kindle app.

How to Turn Off Google’s Annoying New Personal Search Results – This is kind of a follow-up to the Google+ integration in Google Search articles I just posted about in this week’s Small Business Roundup. This article tells you how to hide these new search results by default. It doesn’t really turn them off and you can easily turn them back on, but if you find them annoying or unhelpful, this will help you out.

WordPress 3.3.1 Security and Maintenance Release – WordPress released an important security update. This update shouldn’t cause any trouble for your theme or plugins and you should apply it now if you haven’t already.

Speed Up WordPress with W3 Total Cache – I’ve used this plugin on a couple of sites now and it really seems to work. This is a good write-up covering all the features.

New High-Quality Free Fonts – You know me, I love fonts! Especially when they’re free. There are some really slick ones here. Great to add to your collection.

Amazon’s Send to Kindle App Makes Sending Documents to Your Kindle as Easy as Right-Clicking – As a relatively new Kindle owner, I’m super excited to try this out. If you’re on Windows and have a Kindle, definitely check this out.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Small Business Roundup

This week’s Small Business Roundup includes Google+ integration in Google Search, Gmail phishing message, and un-resolutions for 2012.

Google Merges Search and Google+ Into Social Media Juggernaut – Google really wants you to use Google+. I suppose that’s one way to guarantee your social media venture is a hit – integrate it with the world’s most popular search engine and no one has a choice. Many differing opinions on this. There are so many more articles out there, but this is another one I particularly liked: Google Search Plus Is Shaking Things Up a Bit

Stop Looking Like a Phisher in Gmail – There are a lot of us using Gmail and you’ve probably seen this error message before: “This message may not have been sent by [email address]. Learn more Report phishing.” If you use Gmail and people see this when you send email to them, read this article to figure out how to fix it.

Freelancing Un-resolutions to Make 2012 Your Best Freelancing Year Yet – There are 10 really great suggestions here. There are a few of them that I could definitely put into practice.

How to Compute Your Business Income – This is a good article if you need a refresher or if you are just getting started and want to know how to figure out these numbers. I highly recommend working with a financial professional but you really should know what these numbers mean and how to calculate them yourself, too.

I Am Not a Web Designer – I thought this article was fascinating. And, it’s very true! As small business owners or freelancers, we do a lot more than our job title indicates. I primarily identify myself as a web developer because that’s mostly what I do. I mean, it’s what pays the bills, right? But I’m also business consultant, customer service, billing/accounting, blogger, project manager, adviser, brainstorm-er, troubleshooter, and – maybe most of all – fixer. That’s something to really think about the next time someone asks you what you do. Maybe I should drop the “web developer” and just go with the “Internet Business Consultant” title. Except that always confuses the heck out of everyone, so maybe not. ;)

Weekly Tech Roundup

This week’s Tech Roundup includes Google getting into trouble with Google, New Year’s resolutions for designers, and HTML5 and CSS3 cheat sheets.

Google’s Jaw-Dropping Sponsored Post Campaign For Chrome – I don’t know that it’s “jaw-dropping”… maybe “eyebrow-raising”; certainly interesting. If you know anything about how Google search operates, paid links are a big, bad no-no. And now they have their own sponsored links. It’s not okay unless they do it? There are two follow-up articles at the end that continue the story.

Google+ Is Going To Mess Up The Internet – I think this is somewhat related to the previous post. Apparently Google is ranking shared links on Google+ higher in search results than the original article. This is obviously a rant but it’s still an interesting read because even though the author is noticeably angry, he has a very good point.

10 New Year’s resolutions for designers – I love this article! And not just because of these two: “stop stealing crap” and “learn to write,” but also “Stop being your own obstacle,” which is one of my all-time favorites, and “Stop Using Your Mom as an Example of a Stupid Person.” There’s a lot of good advice here and I hope people read it and embrace it. Oh, and these aren’t just for designers…

Test on Real Mobile Devices without Breaking the Bank – Interesting article and a good resource if you’re looking to expand your mobile testbed on the cheap. I don’t know that you really need to own all of these devices. There are enough emulators (yes, I know they don’t do everything – I ran into an excellent example of that this week) out there to get by on and I’m sure you have friends you can hit up to check things out for you occasionally.

Seven things still missing from CSS – The author of this article named some of my favorite pet peeves about CSS. Great stuff!

The Best HTML5 and CSS3 Cheat Sheets of 2011 – Quite a few cheat sheets here. Great if you are still learning HTML5 or CSS3 or to use for quick reference when you’re working on a project.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Tech Roundup

This week’s Tech Roundup includes upgrading to Windows 8, Google Easter Eggs, and an iTunes adventure.

Should You Upgrade to Windows 8? – I could certainly handle a 6-second boot-up. Worth a read if you are considering upgrading to Windows 8 when it comes out.

10 Nifty Google Easter Eggs That Will Amuse You – These are fun! Take a couple of minutes to take a look.

Adobe Abandons Flash on Mobile Devices – I’m all for more HTML5 and less Flash. Glad to see this move by Adobe.

If you know me personally you know I’ve struggled with my iTunes library since I upgraded my machine to Windows 7 a few months ago. OMG. That was a nightmare! I wasn’t really without my music but I kinda was. And I didn’t feel like I could buy anything new because I knew I had a huge mess I needed to fix. I tried just about everything I could think of and research online and finally I decided I was just going to need to take a few hours and do a whole bunch of manual work. I had music files in 2 different places before the OS upgrade and each time I tried to fix my library before I’d end up with 3-6 duplicates of almost everything. Anyway… I finally fixed it! Here’s what I did:

  • Closed iTunes
  • Removed iTunes folder (where the library files live)
  • Removed all of my music folders
  • Fired up my external drive with my backed up music on it
  • Copied over one set of music directories
  • With the second set of directories, I went through each one and compared it to the one I had just copied. If there were duplicates I either didn’t copy them or I fixed them in some way (some weren’t in an album directory, for example).
  • With everything copied to my music directory, I fired up iTunes and added my music folder to the library. It worked for quite a while (almost 5500 songs, not to mention videos and podcasts) and then I imported my playlists.
  • I had iTunes show my all my duplicates and I removed the ones that were legit (I have some songs multiple times on different albums – think Christmas music). There were way fewer duplicates than even pre-upgrade.
  • I wiped and synced my iPod for the first time in months.
  • Finally, I squealed with joy and did a little dance. A huge weight was lifted off my shoulders and I happily started the Christmas music up. :)

That was my “geek” project for the week. Did you do anything geeky-fun this week?

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Small Business Roundup

This week’s Small Business Roundup includes marketing tips, Square, home office tax tips, and Emergency Turnaround Clinic from IttyBiz.

Square Updates Mobile Payments App – How would you like to pay for something just by speaking your name? That’s one of the new features in the Square iPhone app. Coming soon to Android.

7 Steps To Sure Fire Marketing Success – Admittedly, I haven’t had a chance to read this in detail yet. That’s part of the reason I’m keeping it on the list – so I can remember to read it later. :) Looks like some good stuff.

What and How Much of Your Home Office Can be Deducted – As always, run any tax advice by your accountant first, but some good tips here if you have a home office. And I didn’t know you could deduct repairs and improvements. That’s super handy!

Google+ Pages: connect with all the things you care about – Google+ now allows companies and brands to sign up. Are you going to sign your business up? I probably will but it’s not high on my priority list right now. Here’s another article, including 4 reasons why you should give G+ a chance: From #BWELA: Why Guy Kawasaki and Chris Brogan are betting big on Google+

New Google Search Update Could Spell More Trouble for Business Websites – In case you needed another reason to keep your website updated (Do I sound like a broken record yet?), here’s more proof of the benefit. Google is focusing more on regular updates in its newest search algorithm. So if you haven’t updated your website in 5 years but have great search rankings – that might change.

Finally, I’m taking a class from IttyBiz this month. It’s called Emergency Turnaround Clinic. First off, I’m a huge fan of Naomi from IttyBiz. I think she’s amazing and a genius. I am so excited about this class. I’ve already had brilliant ideas and I’m not even halfway through. I can see taking myself through this class (or at least parts) once or twice a year. Yes, it’s that useful already. You can still sign up and you don’t have to be in “turnaround” mode but it is definitely geared toward that. It’s pay-what-you-can, so if you’re not in turnaround mode, I suggest you pay full price. :) If you are in turnaround, she really means pay-what-you-can.

Weekly Small Business Roundup – July 22, 2011

Weekly Small Business Roundup

I read a lot of blogs. I subscribe to a lot more blogs than I have time to read. Sound familiar? If you're like me, you don't have time to read everything you want (if you do, please tell me your secret). In an effort to reduce the chaos of life, I do two weekly article roundups: one for small business things and one for technical things.

Here's a roundup of the most interesting small business articles I found this week. Enjoy!

Business owners band together, offer advice – This is a great story about a group of business owners in New Jersey with a free networking group. These business groups are excellent for those of us that don’t like traditional networking because it doesn’t feel like we’re networking, it feels like sharing stories and helping each other out (but, of course, that is networking). There are a lot of these kinds of groups around (and even more of the “Eww, networking” variety). The great thing is if there isn’t a group in your area that meets your needs you can start your own!

Work Your Profit Margin – Ten Ways To Increase Profit By Working Smarter Not Harder – This article has “10 ways to streamline, automate, and stop wheel-spinning.” Who wouldn’t love to stop the wheel-spinning? The suggestions are tech-heavy but that doesn’t mean you need to be a geek to use them. Think about how you could apply these tips and tools to your business. For example, if you have an appointment-based business, a variation of #2 “Get your calendar online” is to start using an online scheduling system.

5 Ways To Raise Your Rates And Keep Your Clients – These are nonthreatening, non-scary ways to raise your rates. Many of them make so much sense I wonder how I hadn’t thought of them on my own. I love the idea of building rate increases into your business process so it is just how it is. It’s definitely a mind hack but it’s a great one! How do you approach price increases in your business?

Facebook Sponsored Stories Performing 2 Times Better Than Standard Ads – Facebook’s Sponsored Stories are essentially a word-of-mouth kind of advertising because it’s based on a friend’s Likes and check-ins. It acts as a sort of endorsement of a product, service, or company. I haven’t seen any of these ads in my Facebook experience yet but it seems like it would be more appealing to see what my friends like than the traditional ad style. It would also be interesting to see what kinds of businesses are seeing success with it.

How Do I Make the Most of Google+? – This article covers layout adjustments, keyboard shortcuts, sharing plugins, and more. I’m sure it’s not comprehensive but it’s covers a lot. Also on G+, Gphangouts Lists Public Google+ Hangouts for You to Join – If you’re on G+ you’ve probably seen the green “Start a Hangout” button and wondered what that was really all about. Hangouts are kind of like video chat rooms where you can discuss a specific topic. This site will show you a list of current Hangouts and you can publish your own.

If you enjoy these Roundups please share with your friends!

Tech news is up later this afternoon. Have a great weekend!
